![]() ![]() 7 volt drop only makes things much worse. It's hard enough to get a charge into a camper battery dues to the long run of relatively small wire involved. It would help all of us- including you- if you put all of your truck and camper details is your signature. If it happens to be a Lance, no need for an isolator. Only difference is I put the camper battery under the hood too and ran a power line into the cab for the cb and kids dvd players too. I installed the solenoid in that charge wire.ĭid similar, had a diode isolator until one of the terminals rusted off then went with a voltage controlled relay. What I can not remember is where I found the wire that runs back to the plug (charge wire) and cut it. When parked and camping, (anytime the truck key is off) the camper could completely discharge and I would still have my truck batteries fully charged. It is triggered by keyed power from the fuse box, and therefore the solenoid allows current to charge the batteries when the truck key is on. I just installed a constant duty solenoid under the hood. I will post the wiring diagram and pictures if there is interest.Ģ015 Jeep Wrangler toad w/ ReadyBrake/Brute ![]() I always have my lights on while driving, day or night. I have a 2011 Dodge and addressed this issue by installing the relay in the camper, and I powered the coil on the relay from the running lights. for $20 I got a continuous duty relay from NAPA that lasted until I traded the truck in. Fortunately I realized what was happening and hooked all the terminal together which bypassed the junk iso. Didn't matter, it died with trailer in tow late one night. It was rated at 160 amp and my alt was only 120 amps. I made sure I used the biggest I could find. I was warned against using a diode based isolater but did it anyway. Instructions for wiring is shown in their installation guide. I would suggest a relay style such as this from Tekonsha. I would not use one of the diode based isolator. Just dont wish to run another plug?Ġ1 Ford F250 4x4 DRW Diesel, 01 Elkhorn 9U The sure powere will do a few of the things you mentioned. Introducing a lot of variables when original plan was to isolate truck? Any scenerio you can imagine is doable. They arent designed for that kind of use, number one for me is ensureing no matter what the truck will start-now. IN either case you dont want to be cycling the truck batteries-even if you have charge source. Tow Vehicle Dodge Ram 3500 Diesel 4WD 2010 Truck Camper - NorthStar PopUp 850 SC 2011 If I've got an external 110 power source, either it's a generator that I could charge the truck batteries with or an RV park that I could find someone else and just use jumper cables. ![]() But leaving the bye pass switch on would defeat the isolator, so maybe it's not worth worrying about charging the truck batteries. I'm thinking I could also add a bye pass switch that would allow the truck batteries to be charged when the camper is plugged into an external 110 power source. When the engine isn't running, the house batteries shouldn't be able to drain the truck batteries. The isolator would have the diode to allow charging of the house battery when the engine is running and voltage is higher at the plug. In my case, terminal 1 would not be connected. This is probably near the converter/12v fuse panel. What I think I need to do is find in the camper where the 12v lead comes in from the trailer plug and insert the isolator at this point. I've got a Surepower 952 which I'm planning on using and installing in the camper. Most wiring diagrams show the isolator in the engine compartment with the alternator attaching to the A terminal, truck batteries to 1 terminal, house batteries to 2 terminal. So that means the camper can drain the truck batteries and you wouldn't be able to start the engine. The plug on the hitch is hot when the key is off. The camper just plugs into the trailer hitch plug, no separate wires coming from the engine compartment. I've got a Ram 2010 3500 with a 2011 camper on it.
